By the time you read this, I will probably be glued to my TV screen, watching this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special – which, incidentally, will also be the last episode to feature Matt Smith. As of next week, Geek’s Dream Girl will have stopped producing new content, so I won’t have written my thoughts on the new regeneration. And honestly, I’m finding the timing kind of fitting.
My first post for GDG went live on February 23, 2009. To demonstrate just how long a time that’s been, here’s a snippet from that introduction:
My TV tastes, on the other hand, are decidedly soft. Red Dwarf and the Taken miniseries are long-term loves. My favorite Doctor changes on any given day, but I’m currently torn between David Tennant and Patrick Troughton (and I’m one of those rabidly awaiting Steven Moffat’s turn at the helm as head writer and executive producer, and wishing Neil Gaiman would write an episode).
Yup. Once a Moffat fangirl, always a Moffat fangirl, apparently. And clearly I should be making hiring decisions for the show and take up playing the stock market as well, because my prescience is excellent.
The last five years have been a blast. I’ve gotten to share what I love on a regular basis. I’ve gotten to help fellow geeks analyze their love lives and writing skills, and hopefully get them one step closer to where they wanted to be. I blasted the Syfy channel and actually got a response; I had the opportunity to interview Richard Hatch.
I’ve met fantastic people through GDG, and tops, of course, is E. She’s endlessly patient, fun and funny, and she’s really the spirit behind the site.
Most of my writing in those five years focused on Doctor Who, both classic and current, and that’s likely because Matt Smith was the Doctor, and he pretty much instantly became my Doctor. My interest in other TV shows, video games, and other bits of geek pop culture waxed and waned – I probably even grew out of some things – but thanks to Moffat’s writing and Matt Smith’s excellent performances, Doctor Who remained fresh and intriguing. And despite my ongoing hipster tendencies, it’s been pretty wild seeing the popularity of the show grow in America.
I’d still be happy if he carried on for another ten years, but I know that’s not in the spirit of the show, and I am eager to see Capaldi’s interpretation. However, will I wind up liking the new regeneration enough to have written about him week after week? Hard to say.
In the same vein, the lives of the writers have changed over the years, and we all have new and different priorities. I don’t have any immediate plans to keep up a public presence, but who knows? Perhaps Doctor Who or something else will become so amazing I’ll have to share. Perhaps I’ll move on to something completely different.
Either way, the end of the year represents a good-bye – but it’s really just a change. And since I’m not one to dig in my heels and say “I don’t want to go,” I’m looking forward to the future. I hope you are too.
